Narration: Outside an old, dilapidated mud house in a village, Gauri was laying bricks made of clay and sand. Nearby, her sister-in-law Chanda sat holding a small earthen pot.
Chanda (19 years old) (Anxiously): Bhabhi, there are only two sips of water left in this pot. All the water will be used up just applying this wet clay to the wall.
Gauri (23 years old) (Reassuringly): Don't worry, Chanda. We will use every single drop of water very carefully. We won't let even a drop of water fall on the ground.
Chanda (19) (calmly): But *Bhabhi*, why do we need to plaster this outer wall in such scorching heat? It’s burning our skin.
Gauri (23) (smiling): If we apply this thick layer of mud and straw to the outer wall, the house will stay cool in the afternoon. It’s our only defense against the furnace-like heat of this desert.
Narration: Just then, Gauri’s mother-in-law, Kamala Devi, comes out and speaks to Gauri angrily:
Kamala Devi (54) (sharply): Gauri! Hey, girl! What is this spectacle of wasting water in this scorching desert? We don't have enough water to drink, yet here you are, polishing the walls!
Gauri (23) (affectionately): *Maa-ji*, it was getting terribly hot inside the house. So, just a little mud...
Kamala Devi (54) (irritatedly): Will plastering mud cool down the heat of our misfortune? Come inside and do some proper work; stop this nonsense!
Narration: The conversation was still underway when Gauri’s husband, Mohan, arrived home on his bicycle, and Kamala immediately went up to him:
Kamala Devi (54) (in surprise): What happened, Mohan? Did you find any work today, or have you come back empty-handed again?
Mohan (26) (explaining): No, *Maa*... there was no work at the market today either. Everyone came back empty-handed.
Kamala Devi (54) (irritatedly): Oh God! When will the day come when you actually earn some money? First, your father took out loan after loan and landed us on this barren patch of land, and now you aren't able to do anything either! Mohan (26) (quietly): Ma, I am trying my best. I’ll go to the city market again tomorrow morning.
Kamla Devi (54) (tauntingly): That’s all you ever do—try! But stomachs get filled with food, not with your attempts!
Narration: Hearing Kamla Devi’s voice, Gauri’s father-in-law, Bhairav Singh, emerges from the room, coughing.
Bhairav Singh (58) (interrupting): Kamla, why are you lashing out at the children? Mohan has just returned after wandering in the scorching sun all day. And you start in on him the moment he arrives? We’ll get only what is written in our destiny.
Kamla Devi (54) (angrily): Destiny? Our destiny is ruined because of you, Bhairav Singh! If you hadn’t taken that bank loan, we wouldn’t be rotting in this desolate place today!
Flashback begins -
Narration: Bhairav Singh sat in the courtyard of his large, concrete house, clutching his head as he gazed at the parched fields.
Bhairav Singh (58) (worriedly): Oh God! Not a single drop of rain has fallen this time either. The wells have dried up, and the crops have all turned to ash. How will we face the moneylender now?
Kamla Devi (54) (anxiously): So, what do we do now? Our stock of grain is running out, too.
Bhairav Singh (58) (thoughtfully): I’ll take a large loan from the government bank for farming. When the rains are good next time, we’ll sell the harvest and pay off the entire debt.
Kamla Devi (54) (happily): Yes, that sounds right; we should go to the bank immediately.
Narration: Bhairav Singh and Kamla take out a loan worth lakhs from the bank. The year passes, and the crops are ruined once again.
Bhairav Singh (58) (worried): All my hard work has gone to waste again. The time to repay the loan has arrived, and we are already facing a crisis at home; how will I pay the money now?
Narration: A few days later, bank officials and the police arrive at their doorstep.
