The Cubs entered the 2007 season on high expectations with the addition of veteran manager Lou Piniella, and major offseason free agent acquisition Alfonso Soriano, who was coming off a 40-for-40 2006 season (40 doubles, 40 home runs). Through the first two months of the season however, the Cubs had a record of 22-29 and were tied with the Pirates and Cardinals at 6.5 games behind the first place Brewers. After ending the month of May by getting swept at home to the Florida Marlins, the frustration had reached a breaking point in the Cubs clubhouse entering play on the 1st day of June.
This game is considered to be one of the major turning points for the Chicago Cubs in the 2007 season. After Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano struggled in the fifth inning allowing five runs, and seven total runs on the day, Zambrano approached his catching battery mate Michael Barrett in the dugout and had a few choice words to exchange.
By the looks of Zambrano's body language, he conveyed that Barrett's poor performance behind the plate was the reason why he struggled on the mound. Barrett pointed to the scoreboard as if to suggest Zambrano was at fault for the seven runs given up to the Atlanta Braves, instead of himself. Zambrano took exception, and a physical altercation erupted in the Cubs dugout that had to be diffused by their coaches and teammates.
Zambrano's day was finished, and Barrett was replaced by Koyie Hill. A Cubs comeback fell short late, and the Braves held on by a score of 8-5 with a total of 20 hits to the Cubs 10 hits.
After a signature argument and ejection by Lou Piniella the following day, the Cubs started to get hot, and by the end of July, they were in first place. The Cubs would finish the 2007 season as National League Central Division Champions.
