What happens when some of rock's most adventurous musicians create an entire musical movement without even agreeing that they're part of one?
Welcome to **The Canterbury Scene**, one of the strangest, most fascinating, and most overlooked chapters in progressive rock history.
While bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson were taking progressive rock to new heights, a loosely connected group of musicians was exploring something entirely different.
From the beautiful melodies and sophisticated arrangements of *Caravan* to the classically influenced complexity of **Egg**, the jazz-rock experimentation of **Soft Machine**, and the psychedelic absurdity of **Gong**, the Canterbury Scene produced some of the most original music of the 1960s and 1970s.
But was it really a musical movement? Some of the musicians didn't think so. And some of the bands weren't even from Canterbury!
In this Record Dork deep dive, we're exploring the remarkable musical family tree that connects Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Steve Hillage, Dave Stewart, Richard Sinclair, and countless others.
We'll trace the story from the Wilde Flowers through Caravan, Egg, Soft Machine, Gong, Hatfield and the North, National Health, and beyond.
Along the way, we'll explore extraordinary albums like *In the Land of Grey and Pink*, *The Polite Force*, *Third*, *The Rotters' Club*, and *Rock Bottom*.
It's a story of musical innovation, unlikely friendships, creative differences, and musicians who refused to let anyone tell them what their music was supposed to sound like.

And here's the bigger question: *Was the Canterbury Scene actually a musical genre, or simply a community of musicians who refused to be confined by one?*
