President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces will serve as the major sub-contractor on the $4 billion Accra-Kumasi Expressway, working under the main contractor once selected. The announcement came at a ceremony near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, where the Regiment formally handed over 175.6km of cleared right-of-way — completed in 19 weeks, a week ahead of schedule. Mahama also directed the Regiment to begin clearing the right-of-way for the proposed New Accra Orbital road, and announced plans to honour the unit with the Order of the Companion of the Volta. Government says $2 billion is already secured in a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana for the project, with the total expected to reach $4 billion by year-end — funded, officials say, without new borrowing. The Expression of Interest for contractor prequalification was published September 11, with a selection process expected to take up to four weeks. The six-lane, access-controlled Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a flagship project under Ghana's "Big Push" infrastructure programme, designed to cut travel time between the country's two largest cities from 5-6 hours to roughly two.
