What place does God’s law have in the life of a Christian? Are the Old Testament commandments still binding today, or did Christ abolish them? In this introductory sermon to a series on the Ten Commandments, Pastor Don Elbourne examines Psalm 19 :7–11 and explains why David could declare, “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul.” We consider the three traditional categories of Old Testament law: • Civil laws that governed ancient Israel • Ceremonial laws that pointed forward to Jesus Christ • Moral laws that reflect God’s unchanging character The sermon also explores the three uses of God’s moral law. The law serves as a muzzle to restrain evil, a mirror to expose our sin and drive us to Christ, and a guide to direct believers in lives of grateful obedience. God’s law cannot cleanse us or save us. It reveals our guilt and shows us our need for the Savior. Jesus Christ perfectly fulfilled the law and bore the punishment deserved by everyone who repents and trusts in Him. Having been justified by grace, believers then look to God’s commandments as a guide for sanctification and conformity to the image of Christ.
