Welcome to Day 93 of the One Year Fast! I’m Alfie Hammersham, and today marks an important milestone: I just completed my second official DEXA scan of this year-long fasting journey. In this episode, I break down the new body composition numbers, see where my fat loss and lean mass stand after 93 days, and put my Hume Smart Scale to the test to see how closely home bioimpedance tech matches gold-standard medical imaging. I also talk through an issue I'm dealing with today: feeling noticeably dehydrated despite staying disciplined with my electrolyte protocol and drinking hydrogenated water throughout the fast. Are DEXA Scans Safe? (Radiation & Repeat Scans) A question I get asked frequently when tracking body composition with DEXA is whether repeated scans are safe. The short answer is that DEXA scans are generally considered very low risk: Radiation: A DEXA scan utilizes a very small amount of ionizing radiation—typically far less than a standard CT scan and comparable to or below ordinary X-ray examinations. Non-Invasive & Painless: There are no injections, discomfort, or prep downtime. No Residual Radiation: You do not emit radiation or remain radioactive after stepping off the scanner. Perspective on Dose: A typical whole-body DEXA body-composition scan delivers roughly 1–10 microsieverts (µSv), depending on the equipment and protocol. That is a minuscule exposure (for context, everyday background radiation delivers more over just a few days). Repeated Scans: Because the exposure dose is so minimal, DEXA is widely used to monitor body composition and bone density over time. However, scans should always be intentional rather than excessive, as exposure is not zero. Pregnancy: Any potential or confirmed pregnancy should always be disclosed to the imaging clinic beforehand due to ionizing radiation. If you’re considering periodic scans to monitor body composition during an extended fasting protocol, the radiation exposure itself is generally not considered a significant concern—the key question is simply whether the tracking data justifies the cost and frequency. DEXA vs. Hume Smart Scale: How well does dual-frequency BIA hold up against full X-ray absorptiometry? Hydration Realities: Why electrolytes and hydrogenated water sometimes aren't enough to prevent dry mouth and dehydration dips on extended fasting days.
