Pharmaceutical preparations consist of one or more active and inactive ingredients dispersed in a suitable vehicle. The concentration describes the ratio of the quantity of an ingredient (solute) to the total amount of the preparation (solution, suspension, or mixture). Concentrations can be expressed in different ways: % w/v (weight/volume): grams of solute in 100 mL of solution. % w/w (weight/weight): grams of solute in 100 g of preparation. % v/v (volume/volume): milliliters of solute in 100 mL of solution. Ratio strength (1 in x): one part solute in x parts of preparation. Molarity (M): moles of solute per liter of solution.
