Twenty-five years ago today, 343 FDNY members gave their lives at the World Trade Center. Since that morning, more than 400 FDNY members have died from World Trade Center-related illnesses, surpassing the number lost on September 11 itself.
Mike O'Connell responded that day at 25 years old with Ladder 129 and stayed on the pile for weeks. What never left him was the sound of PASS alarms beneath the rubble, the alarms that sound when a firefighter stops moving. He has spent the 25 years since in Washington, fighting for the responders still living with the cost of that day.
The sacrifice did not end on September 11. Today we remember them all.
