This Map Has Been Lying To You For 500 Years

Look at any world map — the one from school, the one on Google Maps, the one on a wall somewhere right now. Greenland looks about the same size as Africa. It isn't. Africa is fourteen times larger. The map didn't get this wrong by accident. In 1569, a cartographer designed it purely to help sailors navigate — and the trade-off was that land near the poles gets wildly inflated while land near the equator shrinks. That "navigation trick" became the default way millions of people learned what the world looks like, and the distortion never went away. This is the story of the map almost nobody questions, the fifty-year academic fight over fixing it, the school district that actually replaced it in six hundred classrooms, and the U.S. state that passed an actual law about it in 2024. 🔔 Subscribe for more history hiding in plain sight. 💬 Comment: what's something you assumed was just "how things are," that turned out to be someone's centuries-old design choice? #funny #history #4k
