Unscoped aircheck from iHeartMedia owned CHR-formatted KWTX in Waco, Texas (also serving Killeen, Temple and Fort Hood, a separate, larger radio market but same TV market). Recorded over the air in Waco, Texas around 3pm on Thursday, October 1, 2026 while I was driving back from Dallas.
KWTX-FM signed on December 7, 1970 as a simulcast of its sister AM station KWTX 1230, which carried an MOR format. The station became CHR "97FM" in the mid 80s, which morphed in to today's "97.5 FM" in the 90s (so that's how they ended up branding with just the frequency).
The station has a massive signal covering the Waco-Killeen-Temple area since it broadcasts from the KXXV tower in Moody, TX intended to cover the larger TV market. It used to hit Dallas and Austin pretty easily but unfortunately due to translators being in both markets now, that's cut in to their coverage area and these days they come in around Hillsboro and fade around Georgetown.
Originally locally owned by Buddy Bostick through KWTX Broadcasting, he retired around 1998 and sold the group to chain owners. The TV side went to Gray while radio ended up with Capstar later folded into AMFM, Clear Channel and now iHeart. They are now based in the old WACO radio building a couple streets down from the KWTX studio. The radio side still sources weather from the TV side, though they did switch to KCEN for a few years before changing back to KWTX. Despite this, they still use KCEN's old early 2010s music for weather despite a KWTX meteorologist giving the weather.
This has always been one of my favorite stations because it historically was a well-programmed small market CHR, though cutbacks at iHeart have led to the cluster having just two local personalities and none at KWTX-FM currently. 20 years ago they had local mornings, middays, and afternoon drive. Middays got cut first then mornings in the early 2010s, and afternoons went away after their then-PD Carter left for Dallas in 2018. The station has not had a local host or PD since and it now runs a national log and generic imaging full time. All these tracks from KIIS-based EJ are pretty generic and can run in any market. They have an obviously separate recording of him saying "97-5 FM" before the generic track begins. Generic imaging voiced by Drew Hall is also used and the same imaging is used on other small market iHeart CHRs as well.
