What is lost when rising waters swallow not only homes, but the places that connect a community to its past?
In Baringo County, Kenya, this documentary follows the Ilchamus community as the rapid expansion of Lake Baringo submerges homes, schools, grazing lands and entire villages.
Beyond the visible destruction lie losses that cannot be measured in money: ancestral graves, cultural sites, traditional livelihoods and a sense of belonging. The film explores the deep emotional and cultural impacts of repeated displacement, as places once kilometres from the shoreline disappear underwater.
Discover how displacement without structured resettlement is weakening the social and cultural bonds that hold the community together. This documentary brings attention to the often-invisible dimensions of loss and damage and what it means to lose not just a home, but connections to land, heritage and community.
This story was produced under the non-economic loss and damage (NELD) fund. The NELD project is implemented by Baringo Women & Youth Organisation with learning support from SouthSouthNorth, funded by the Climate Justice Resilience Fund (CJRF) from the Scottish Government.
Filmed, edited and produced by Kalmax Productions, Kenya.
