Lake Michigan transformed under a powerful north gale on October 16. Working buoys measured significant waves of 11.8 feet near Michigan City and 12.5 feet at Rawley Point East, while observed gusts near the southern shore reached roughly 40 mph. The Michigan City Fire Department's message was urgent: stay off the pier and stay out of the water. This report follows the storm across Michigan City, New Buffalo, South Haven, Chicago and Rawley Point. It explains why a long north-to-south wind path allowed the lake to build so quickly, how significant wave height describes an entire field of rough water, and why cold-water immersion beside a breakwall can become life-threatening in seconds. The lakewide Gale Warning forecast north winds of 25–35 knots with gusts to 45 knots. A later southern open-lake forecast called for 14–18-foot significant waves with occasional waves up to 23 feet. Those larger values were forecast ceilings; the buoy observations featured in this video reached 7.9–12.5 feet. By Monday morning, high pressure had weakened the wind and waves had dropped sharply. The same lake that had been hammering exposed piers was returning toward calm—an important reminder to check the current marine forecast every time you approach the shoreline. For safety, watch large waves from well back. Never enter an exposed pier or breakwall during a gale or hazardous-wave event. 00:00 Lake Michigan transforms 00:47 Buoys measure 12-foot waves 01:43 Lakewide Gale Warning 02:34 Why the north wind mattered 03:43 The Michigan City pier danger 04:44 Cold-water shock 05:53 Why the hazard hugged the shoreline 06:54 The gale spans Lake Michigan 08:06 High pressure collapses the waves 09:03 The final warning National Weather Service Gale Warning: https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/w...
