Laurel Hill: The Abandoned Tunnel Guarded Around the Clock

In the mountains of western Pennsylvania, at milepost ninety nine of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, there is an abandoned highway tunnel that behaves like no abandoned place in America. The pavement inside is fresh. The temperature inside is controlled. Both portals are sealed behind barriers, and the site is patrolled. If you park nearby and try to walk in, someone will come and turn you around. And for years, hikers on the ridge above have reported the same strange thing. From deep inside a tunnel that has been closed to traffic since nineteen sixty four, they hear engines. Not one engine. Screaming, high performance engines, running at full throttle, inside a mountain.
