Git Branching Project | 3 Feature Branches and Merge into Main
In this video, we build a practical Git project using multiple feature branches and learn how developers can work on different features independently before merging them into the main branch.
We will create a project with one main branch and three feature branches:
feature-login
feature-profile
feature-dashboard
Each feature branch will contain a small independent change. After completing the development, all three feature branches will be merged back into main.
PROJECT SCENARIO
We start with a basic project on the main branch.
Then we create three independent feature branches:
1. feature-login
2. feature-profile
3. feature-dashboard
Each branch represents a different feature being developed independently.
FEATURE 1: LOGIN
The feature-login branch will contain a small login-related change.
Example:
Add login functionality
Add username and password validation
Test the login feature
Commit the changes
FEATURE 2: PROFILE
The feature-profile branch will contain a profile-related change.
Example:
Add user profile functionality
Display user information
Add profile-related logic
Commit the changes
FEATURE 3: DASHBOARD
The feature-dashboard branch will contain a dashboard-related change.
Example:
Add dashboard functionality
Display basic statistics
Add dashboard-related logic
Commit the changes

GIT COMMANDS COVERED
git branch
git checkout -b
git switch -c
git status
git add
git commit
git log
git merge
git branch
git diff
git push
These commands are demonstrated as part of a practical feature-development workflow.
WHY USE FEATURE BRANCHES?
Feature branches allow developers to work on different features without directly modifying the main branch.
For example:
main
|
|-- feature-login
|
|-- feature-profile
|
|-- feature-dashboard
Each developer or feature can be developed independently.
Once the feature is completed and tested, it can be merged into main.
REAL-WORLD DEVELOPMENT SCENARIO
Imagine a software development team building an application.
One developer works on login.
Another developer works on the user profile.
Another developer works on the dashboard.
Instead of everyone directly changing main, each developer works on a separate feature branch.
After development and testing, the completed features are merged into the main branch.
This workflow helps organize development and makes it easier to track changes.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
By the end of this project, you will understand:
How to create feature branches
Why feature branches are useful
How branches are created from main
How to implement features independently
How to commit changes
How to switch between branches
How to merge feature branches
How multiple features become part of the main project
How Git tracks changes across branches
How to verify the final merged project
PROJECT STRUCTURE
git-multi-feature-project/
main.py
login.py
profile.py
dashboard.py
README.md
FINAL RESULT
After merging all three branches, the main branch will contain:
Login Feature
+
Profile Feature
+
Dashboard Feature
=
Complete Application
This demonstrates how multiple independent features can be combined into one project using Git branching and merging.
