The room is in a dilapidated state, with the plaster on the walls peeling and flaking off in places. A few kitchen items are kept in one corner, while rolled-up bedding sits in another; there is barely enough space to even set foot in the room. All four daughters-in-law are living in this single room, and their frustration is clearly visible on their faces. Sonal (28) (Irritated, while gathering her clothes): Payal, move all this stuff of yours from here; I need to sleep here. This rain has already been driving me crazy all day, and on top of that, your clothes and boxes are scattered all over the place. Payal (27) (Glaring angrily): I am absolutely not moving my things. What will you do about it? This room belongs to me just as much as it does to you. Sonal (28) (Gesturing emphatically): Look, Payal, I’m telling you nicely—move your stuff, or else I’ll pick it up and throw it out into the rain myself. As if this tiny room wasn't enough, now I have to deal with your tantrums too. Narration: The argument between the two intensifies. Just then, the eldest daughter-in-law, Kriti—who had been sitting in a corner chopping vegetables—gets up and walks over. Kriti (29) (In a stern voice): All you two ever do is fight. Wait, I’ll move her things. Narration: Kriti steps forward, picks up Payal’s belongings, and starts setting them aside. Payal (27) (Exploding in anger): Why did you move my things, *Badi Didi*? You always take her side. Narration: In a fit of anger, Payal grabs a nearby pillow and hurls it at Kriti with all her might. The pillow flies through the air; Kriti dodges it, and it crashes straight into a basket containing clean, washed dishes. All the dishes fall to the floor and get dirty. Diya (25) (Angrily): That’s enough... I’ve had it. I am sick and tired of this constant bickering every single day. Narration: Diya slams the spoon she is holding down hard. Diya (25) (Angrily): I am fed up with your constant bickering. *Maa-ji*... *Maa-ji*, call your son Sameer. I want a decision right now. I cannot stay with these people in this single room for even another moment. Malti (52) (Sadly): I see everything, Diya... but what can I do? You know we have nowhere else to go. Diya (25) (Looking on the verge of tears): I don't know, *Maa-ji*... but I simply cannot live in this one room anymore. Narration: Why are these four daughters-in-law fighting like cats in a single room? Where are their husbands? And what decision is Diya talking about? To understand all this, we need to go back a little. Flashback Starts Narration: It was drizzling outside. Water was dripping from the ceiling of the room. Madhav was sitting in a corner, eating his meal. Madhav (55) (Breaking off a piece of roti and angrily pushing his plate away): What kind of roti is this? It’s completely burnt on one side and raw on the other. Don't you people even know how to cook properly? Kriti (29) (Exasperated): Babuji*, what can I do? Water is dripping from the ceiling right onto the gas stove. While I’m roasting the *rotis on one side... ...on one hand, I'm busy with this, and on the other, the fire is being douse by water droplets... that's how the roti ended up like this.
