This lesson explores how early years practitioners can help young children develop environmental responsibility through simple, meaningful tasks. Rather than expecting children to understand everything at once, practitioners can involve them in tidying resources, sorting recycling, watering plants, sweeping leaves and caring for shared spaces. The lesson explains how visible cause and effect helps children understand that their actions matter. It also introduces practical teaching approaches, including modelling each behaviour, explaining the reason behind it, establishing consistent routines and using picture prompts to show where items belong. As children become more confident, adults can gradually reduce their support so that children take greater ownership. Offering choices, encouraging turn-taking and involving children in decisions about plants or outdoor areas can build confidence, independence, autonomy and teamwork. The lesson also highlights the value of specific positive reinforcement, such as explaining how turning off a tap saves water. Small, repeated, age-appropriate responsibilities can help children develop respect for resources, living things and the wider environment.
