8,000+ allied troops, B-52 bombers and bulldozers vs. hand tools and a few meters of clay: how did an army with all that firepower fail to end an underground war? This is Cu Chi, military tactics explained simply.
In January 1966, an Australian soldier climbed out of a hole carrying a satchel of documents, right where thousands of troops had just walked past. This video shows how the Cu Chi tunnels were dug by hand, why the soil and the design made them so hard to find and destroy, how tunnel rats, gas, dogs and B-52 bombing tried to break the network, and what it all cost the people inside and above.
⏱ CHAPTERS

7:55 Part 4: The lesson
📌 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
• How the Cu Chi tunnels were built by hand over decades
• Why clay soil kept the tunnels open
• How trapdoors, smoke shafts and water bends defended the network
• What Operation Crimp (1966) and Operation Cedar Falls (1967) really found and failed to destroy
• How tunnel rats, gas, dogs and B-52 bombers were used against the tunnels
• Why firepower needs a target: a simple lesson in guerrilla and asymmetric warfare
• What life underground cost, and what civilians lost on the surface
⚠️ ABOUT THE NUMBERS
All figures are public estimates and vary by source: tunnel network size roughly 120 to 250 km; the area found in Operation Crimp about 56 km² with 200+ km of tunnels; Cedar Falls about 16,000 US and 14,000 South Vietnamese troops; about 6,000 of 16,000 fighters in the tunnels survived by some estimates (other sources say fewer than half). The line about a tunnel section under a US base comes from some accounts only.
