The Eternal Light
You found me where the winter roses sleep,
A chapel carved in stone too dark to keep.
Your hand was warm against the marble wall,
And every buried bell began to call.
We crossed the fields beneath a starless sky,
With ash upon our coats and no goodbye.
You spoke my name as if it could remain,
A candle cupped against the coming rain.
The old clock stopped above the western door,
Its hands still pointing toward the days before.
I watched your shadow leave the silver stair,
Then felt your breath still moving in the air.
The river kept the letters that we burned,
The paper darkened, but the words returned.
I read them by the water, line by line,
Your voice inside each silence answering mine.
The choir gathered underneath the dome,
Their solemn notes made strangers feel like home.
You stood among them, pale as morning frost,
And sang the names of everything we lost.
I wore your ring through every empty year,
Its circle cold, its hidden promise clear.
When spring came late across the ruined ground,
A small white flower broke the silence sound.
The city shut its shutters one by one,
While dusk erased the last remains of sun.
You turned to me beside the station rail,
And smiled as if the dark could never prevail.
We left no map, no portrait, no command,
Just footprints fading softly through the sand.
The moon laid silver on the road we knew,
And every mile kept leading back to you.
I heard you in the rafters when winds rose,
In winter branches bowed beneath the snows.
Not as a ghost that asks the heart to grieve,
But as the strength that teaches it to breathe.
The years moved on like curtains through a room,
The dust grew gold, the dark gave way to bloom.
Yet in the hush before the morning birds,
I find you living in the unsaid words.
If death is just a doorway dressed in stone,
Then none who loved are ever quite alone.
I set a flame beside the chapel stair,
And felt your patient presence everywhere.
Now dawn pours through the cracks along the wall,
The final bells no longer sound like calls.
I lift my face; the long night has undone,
And keep your light beneath the rising sun.
The eternal light still burns behind the night,
Two hearts hold fast where worlds divide from sight.
Though time may close the door and dim the flame,
I cross the dark whenever you call my name.
The eternal light still burns behind the night,
Two hearts hold fast where worlds divide from sight.
Though time may close the door and dim the flame,
I cross the dark whenever you call my name.
Whenever you call my name,
I cross the dark again.
