Was Göbekli Tepe really sealed on purpose, or did nature finish what humans started? A brand-new 2026 study is reshaping this ancient mysteries debate as it happens.
For decades, archaeologist Klaus Schmidt argued the 11,600-year-old enclosures at Göbekli Tepe, in southeastern Türkiye, were deliberately backfilled by the hunter-gatherers who built them. Since 2017, site coordinator Lee Clare and architect Moritz Kinzel have found signs of slope wash mixed into that fill. Now a September 2026 paper by Julia Gresky and Lee Clare in PLOS One, based on the first two intact graves ever found there, suggests many of the 900+ scattered human bones pulled from the fill washed down from burials higher on the mound rather than coming from a mysterious ritual.
It's a genuine unexplained archaeological find evolving in real time, straight from the excavation team itself, not a lost civilization conspiracy theory.
Key discoveries in this video:
Construction dated to roughly 9,600 BCE, six millennia before Stonehenge
Schmidt's deliberate-burial theory and the evidence behind it
The 2017 soundings that reopened the debate via erosion evidence
The 2026 PLOS One study on two intact graves and scattered bones
The wider Taş Tepeler network, including Karahan Tepe
Why it matters: it challenges the tidy "sealed temple" story, shows archaeologists revising their own field's biggest theory, and reshapes the Neolithic timeline for the whole region.
Do you think Göbekli Tepe was sealed for spiritual reasons, or did time and erosion finish what people started? Tell us below.
