2027 BMW M5: A Plug-In Hybrid Sports Sedan That Still Feels Like an M Car
Highs and Lows
Strengths include physics-defying dynamics, an explosively quick hybrid powertrain, and 29 miles of real-world electric-only range. Drawbacks include a hefty curb weight that is hard to hide from the driver's seat, and an overload of infotainment and drive-mode settings.
Verdict
The M5 is a genuine M car in every respect despite its weight gain, able to switch from track toy to luxury commuter in an instant.
Overview
The 2027 M5 is a fresh take on BMW's sports sedan legacy, built around a plug-in hybrid powertrain. An electric motor and 14.8-kWh battery add power and up to 29 miles of EPA-estimated electric range, while a twin-turbo V-8 carries the proven side of the formula. Together they make 717 hp, sent to all four wheels through standard all-wheel drive, and the M Driver's package unlocks a 190-mph top speed. All that power comes with weight, as the M5 tips the scales at 5,251 pounds, and the mass is always evident even though the car goes, stops, and turns like an M5 should. The stylish interior, with supportive leather sports seats and expensive-looking finishes, offers a nice distraction. Buyers needing more cargo room can look at the M5 Touring wagon.
Pricing
The 2027 BMW M5 starts at $124,750.
Engine and Performance
The 4.4-liter V-8 and a single electric motor combine for 717 hp, paired with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Several drive modes adjust how the car uses its propulsion sources, including an all-wheel-drive setting with a rear-biased drift mode. Adaptive dampers, rear-wheel steering, and huge brakes are standard. Testers found massive power and capable handling in sportier modes, with good ride quality and a quiet, luxurious feel in Comfort mode. The many settings can be overwhelming at first, but a preferred mode can be dialed in. Main complaints are numb steering and size and weight that make it less engaging than lighter rivals like the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.
Acceleration
Car and Driver recorded 3.0 seconds to 60 mph, slower than the previous nonhybrid M5 Competition's 2.8 seconds but quicker than the Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid's 3.2 seconds.
Range and Charging
The 14.8-kWh battery provides 29 miles of electric-only range, which testers confirmed at highway speeds. It charges at up to 11 kW, and the EPA says two hours on a Level 2 charger fully replenishes it.
Fuel Economy
EPA ratings are 12 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined, notably lower than the previous nonhybrid generation's 15, 21, and 17. In real-world highway testing, however, the M5 returned 27 mpg, far above its EPA highway estimate, and the M5 Touring wagon matched that result. The Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid is rated at 21 city and 24 highway, and a 2025 Panamera 4S E-Hybrid returned 28 mpg in the same test.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The cabin is similar to the regular 5-Series but adds an M-specific flat-bottom steering wheel, large shift paddles, and sportier seats with extra bolstering. Leather, wood, and aluminum trim options are available. Rear passengers get decent legroom and upholstery that mimics the front seats with less aggressive bolstering, and the seatback folds 60/40. Cargo space is 17 cubic feet, fitting six carry-on suitcases, or 20 with the rear seats folded.
