Can you turn a gardenia shrub into a tree? Absolutely—and today I’m showing you how to train a gardenia into standard (tree) form step by step. I started training these container gardenias some time ago…and then I let them grow a little too long. That means we're making some harder pruning decisions than we would have if I'd stayed on top of them. I'll show you how I decide which branches stay, which ones go, how to choose and develop the structure of your standard, and how to maintain its shape as it grows. And something unexpected happens along the way: I realize I actually prefer these gardenias with their lower, multi-stemmed canopies rather than forcing them into the traditional single-trunk form I originally envisioned. Better yet, the two plants end up beautifully symmetrical—which matters because they'll flank the same area. Then we're putting those pruned branches to good use!
