Five years after Stephanie Crone-Overholts died, the McKay Bay jury comes back with a verdict. Then her mother and her son finally get to face Robert Kessler.
This is the last Part of the Robert Kessler trial in Tampa, Florida. Kessler, 74, was charged with murder and abuse of a dead human body in the death of Stephanie, a mother of three sons and a grandmother, whose remains were found in McKay Bay in November 2021. The State said she died in his home and that he put her remains in the bay. The defense told the jury that remains in the bay do not prove a planned murder.
Watch the verdict form closely and listen for which charge the jury chose. Then watch the judge, who does something I rarely see from the bench: he apologizes to the family for how long the system made them wait.
Five years. Stephanie's son tells the court the case was delayed over Kessler's competency, and that Kessler was not required to be in the room for most of his own trial. The judge says he set the trial the moment he saw how old the case was. So who answers for the years before? And when the judge reads out 23 felony convictions and asks how this man ended up caring for a 12-year-old girl, that is a question for the whole system.
