krishna janmashtami ( also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami ), is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of krishna, the eighth avatar of vishnu. Gokulashtami is celebrated with great fervor in south india. in Tamil Nadu, the people decorate the fioor with kolams. the decoration is the not main purpose of a kolam. in olden days, kolams were drawn in coarse rice flour, so the ants would not have to walk too far or too long for a meal. the kolam is also drawn to welcome lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, into the home, and drives away the evil spirits.
