⚫️ Discover Black Kasuka Island and White Kasuka Island in Mihonoseki, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan — two extraordinary uninhabited islands where contrasting black and white volcanic cliffs rise above the crystal-clear waters of the Sea of Japan. ⚪️
Located in Chikumi Bay along the rugged coastline of the Shimane Peninsula, these neighboring islands are among the region's most fascinating natural landmarks.
Although separated by only a short distance, their dramatically different colors create one of Japan's most unusual coastal landscapes.
Around 15 million years ago, this region was shaped by intense submarine volcanic activity during the opening of the Sea of Japan.
Today, the Shimane Peninsula preserves remarkable geological evidence of this dramatic chapter in Earth's history.
White Kasuka Island is believed to owe its brilliant appearance to silica-rich volcanic rocks that were further whitened through hydrothermal alteration caused by ancient volcanic activity.
In contrast, Black Kasuka Island consists of volcanic rocks rich in iron and magnesium, giving it a distinctive dark and rugged appearance.
The striking contrast between these neighboring islands, together with the crystal-clear blue sea, creates a breathtaking landscape found nowhere else.
These islands were already recorded in the Izumo Fudoki, one of Japan's oldest historical records completed in AD 733, where they were described as Kashi Island and Aka Island.
For nearly 1,300 years, they have remained an enduring part of the cultural and natural heritage of the Mihonoseki region.
🎬 For this cinematic aerial journey, I chose "Captured My Heart" by Zahriya Zachary.
Its warm, uplifting melody beautifully complements the harmony of black, white, and blue, helping express this extraordinary landscape as a cinematic visual poem.
