What happened to the saints who rose from their graves when Jesus died? In Matthew 27:52–53, we read one of the most mysterious passages in the entire Bible: tombs were opened, many bodies of the saints were raised, and after Jesus' resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. But who were these people? Why does Matthew mention this extraordinary event in just two verses? Why do the other Gospel writers leave it out? And what happened to these resurrected saints afterward? In this biblical documentary, we examine Matthew's account phrase by phrase and explore the Old Testament prophecies that may shed light on this remarkable event. 📖 IN THIS BIBLE STUDY, WE EXPLORE: • Matthew 27:52–53 and the mysterious resurrection of the saints • The connection between the opened graves and Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones • How Zechariah 14 and Daniel 12 may illuminate Matthew's account • Why Matthew says the saints appeared after Jesus' resurrection • The meaning of Christ as the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep • Why the other Gospel writers do not record this event • The three major Christian interpretations of what happened to these saints afterward • What Scripture reveals—and what it leaves unanswered—about this extraordinary moment Rather than treating speculation as fact, we will distinguish what the Bible explicitly says from interpretations Christians have proposed throughout history. The central question is not merely who these saints were. It is what their appearance reveals about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the promises of Scripture, and the future hope of everyone who belongs to Him.
