I Coached Connor Hellebuyck. This Has Nothing to Do With the Contract.

Connor Hellebuyck requested a trade. Didn't show to training camp. Got suspended by the Jets. And everybody's talking about the contract. I want to talk about something else. I'm Canadian, born and raised. I love this country and I love hockey. I also coached Connor Hellebuyck — I was goalie development coach with the Winnipeg Jets. I'm not speaking for him, I haven't talked to him, and I'm not leaking anything. This is just my read on what's happening, from someone who knows the man, knows the organization, and watched all of this unfold. My wife is American. My kids are dual citizens. I live the Canada-US thing inside my own house. So I'm trying to see this from every angle. Here's the angle I think is missing from almost everything I've read: When the Olympics ended and Team USA went to the White House, the backlash in Canada got personal. His wife, Andrea, received death threats. The Jets' security team had to get involved. Police were involved. Hellebuyck said it himself — "The blowback my wife was getting is just not fair." When your wife and family get death threats, you're in a different ring. One that has nothing to do with the contract. That's what this video is about. — The mental side of the game is what I do.
