Every physical product starts as a list of what it's made of. That list is
called a Bill of Materials, or BOM — and it's the single most important document
in manufacturing. Purchasing uses it to know what to buy. The factory uses it to
know what to assemble. If it's wrong, everything downstream is wrong.
Here's what makes it interesting: one list is never enough. Engineering, the
factory, purchasing and repair teams each need a different version of the same
product. So the definition gets rewritten six times on its way to a customer.
This video walks through all six.
Why it matters: when a supplier reports a defective batch of components, one
company recalls 12,000 units. Another recalls 400,000 — for the exact same
defect. The difference comes down to how they organised their product data.
Built for people who've never worked in manufacturing. Students, job-seekers,
and anyone curious about how real products get made. No prior knowledge needed —
everything is explained from scratch, and we follow one product the whole way
through, along with six people who each own one step: a design engineer, a
component engineer, a configuration manager, a manufacturing engineer, a
production quality lead, and a service engineer.
BY THE END YOU'LL BE ABLE TO
Explain what a Bill of Materials is and why it isn't a simple list
Answer "what's the difference between an EBOM and an MBOM" — a standard
interview question in this field
Describe how one product family supports dozens of variants without dozens of
separate lists
Read the vocabulary you'll see in PLM job adverts: BOP, 150% BOM, as-built,
effectivity, digital thread
Understand how a company traces a discontinued component across everything it
has ever built and shipped
