A Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 around Mount Panorama, Bathurst. Twenty minutes, no commentary: just the RB26, the road, and an original score written for this video.
There is a corner near the top of Mount Panorama called Skyline. It is the crest where the circuit tips over and begins its drop through the Esses toward Forrest's Elbow, and it is one of the great views in motorsport. Taking a Skyline through Skyline is the kind of coincidence worth driving twenty minutes for.
This is the last one.
When R34 production ended in August 2002, it closed out a line that had run since 1969. The GT-R name came back five years later, but the new car was simply the Nissan GT-R. No Skyline. The R34 is the final Skyline GT-R that will ever be built, and the last to carry the RB26 engine.
ABOUT THE CAR
Built January 1999 to August 2002. Only 11,578 were made.
RB26DETT 2.6-litre twin-turbo inline-six, officially rated at 276 hp.
That was the "gentlemen's agreement" figure every Japanese manufacturer quoted through the 1990s. Real output was closer to 320-330.
Getrag V160 six-speed gearbox, ATTESA E-TS Pro all-wheel drive.
A 5.8-inch multi-function display in the centre of the dash, showing boost pressure, oil temperature and lateral G in real time. In a road car. In 1999.
The run ended with the V-Spec II Nur, named for the Nurburgring, where
every generation of GT-R was developed. Just 718 were built.
