I am ASCII DEN, the creator behind VibeDen. After the virtual bassist, I started a MIDI-driven drummer with Astra through Codex.
This is DRUMS EP.1, a development tutorial and an honest record of the failed attempts. The result is still rough. I am keeping the supplied Mixamo Playing Drums body animation as the baseline and improving the playing gradually.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE
• My actual Cubase/BFD3 project and drum MIDI screenshot.
• Why the active BFD key map matters: a pedal note was being interpreted differently from the closed hi-hat stick hits I intended.
• Automatic hand assignment, fast hi-hat alternation and the chosen cymbal-over-hi-hat priority rule.
• Reversed sticks, grip and finger clearance, preparation, impact and rebound.
• Velocity-dependent gestures, long-limbed character fit, elbows, wrists, pedals and cymbal response.
• The body-animation experiment that damaged the arm motion, and why this episode returns to the Mixamo body.
• Real source-code excerpts with original line numbers.
• A 15-second synchronized four-view opening and one uninterrupted minute at the end.
HOW THIS BUILD WORKS
Export the audio and drum MIDI from the same Cubase start point. The program reads the actual BFD mapping, plans the limbs and generates a separate Unreal performance sequence. The rendered sequence includes the matching lead-in. MIDI drives the motion; my exported recording provides all music. No note-by-note manual posing is used for the shown take.
CURRENT LIMITS
This is a development build, not a finished install-and-drag plugin. New body clips still need sampling and regeneration. Some sampled BFD drag articulations need their internal grace-note timing measured. Stick-to-stick avoidance is deferred. Arbitrary body shapes and gestures have not all been checked. The shown performance is a supported 60-second excerpt, not proof that every MIDI file is solved. Visible stiffness and awkward moments remain.

PRODUCTION
Created by ASCII DEN with Astra through Codex. English narration was generated locally using a generic synthetic voice. The Cubase screen is a supplied still image; the performance footage is an actual Unreal Engine render of automatically generated motion. Some closeups are reused during explanation. The opening and closing performance sections use the supplied song recording at its original speed. Source excerpts are shown for explanation; purchased meshes and third-party assets are not redistributed.
