Lanterns completely rewrote John Stewart’s origin, and five episodes in, I think it was the right call. I look at how Green Lantern has always survived through reinvention, from Hal Jordan and Hard Traveling Heroes to John’s original 1970s debut, his frustrating 1980s run, Kyle Rayner, Geoff Johns, and the Justice League cartoon, and why Aaron Pierre may already be the best version of John Stewart. Episode 5 finally proves that this is John’s story. But while the show’s changes to John work, its small-scale universe, budget-conscious ring action, and disappointing Manhunters still leave a lot to be desired.
