Francisco Juan Rodríguez. During the overnight rehearsal, the Band is conducted by the Spanish Royal Guard Band's Director of Music Colonel (Colonél) Fernando Lizana Lozano. The gathering of military musicians is an annual event that takes place on the 11th October (eve of National Day) at the Royal Palace of Madrid. The overnight rehearsal videos are taken on the evening of Saturday 10th October at Fuente de Neptuno (Neptune Fountain), where the main stands and Royal saluting dias is located during the processional route. The videos show various parts of the Royal Guard's ceremony, complete with music, that takes place in front of His Majesty the King of Spain, before the main parade steps off. To watch the ceremony be performed on the day, please see this TV coverage of the event:    • Spain Celebrates National Day 2026: King F...   It is worth noting, that during these rehearsals and ceremony, all commands are given by a pocket valved bugle called 'Cornetine'. This tradition of commands being covered by bugle call is known in Spain as 'Toques de Ordenanza', and something rather unique, especially on such a high pitched bugle. These commands are given by the unit's bugler. Unidad de Música de la Guardia Real was first formed in February 1874, but has existed in its current structure of a symphonic wind band, marching band and fifes and drums since 1998. Unusually, when sat down, the concert band includes both Double Basses and Cellos within their instrumentation. All musicians are fully serving members of the Spanish military and specialise in music with employment directly to the Band after completion of basic military training. Personal note: This was the first Spanish military band I have experienced and I was particularly impressed by the extremely professional balance across the band displayed by the musicians when static and moving. This is a real symphonic wind band that can march and play, a very unique classical sound, blended with traditional Spanish music!
