What if your home could detect a fire, determine where it is, and automatically call for help, even when nobody is around?
In this project, I built an ESP32-based smart fire detection and emergency alert system designed to continuously monitor its surroundings for flames.
The device uses an ESP32-CAM, SIM800L GSM module, NEO-6M GPS, AS711 NIR light sensor, flame sensor, and pan-and-tilt servo motors to create a continuously scanning fire monitoring system.
The camera and flame sensor are mounted on a pan-and-tilt mechanism that constantly scans the surrounding environment. When a possible flame is detected, the system stops scanning and performs an additional check using the NIR sensor.
The system then determines whether the detected fire is likely to be indoors or outdoors.
🔥 Outdoor detection:
The system treats an outdoor flame as a lower-priority event, freezes the scanning mechanism and activates the smaller buzzer.
🚨 Indoor fire detection:
When a fire is detected inside a building, the system treats it as a high-priority emergency. The servos stop, the large buzzer is activated, GPS coordinates are obtained, and the SIM800L GSM module sends an emergency alert to a designated contact or firefighting team.
The system can also make emergency calls repeatedly until the fire condition has been cleared, after which normal scanning resumes.
Hardware used in this project
• ESP32-CAM
• SIM800L GSM module
• NEO-6M GPS module
• AS711 NIR light sensor
• Flame sensor
• Pan and tilt servo motors
• Large emergency buzzer
• Small warning buzzer
• ESP32 microcontroller
• GPS location tracking
• GSM SMS and voice-call communication
This project combines embedded systems, IoT, fire detection, GSM communication, GPS tracking, computer vision, NIR sensing, servo control and automated emergency notification into one prototype.
The goal is to explore how an affordable embedded system could be developed into a smarter fire monitoring and early warning system for homes, offices, workshops, factories and other workplaces.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: This is an experimental engineering prototype and should not be considered a certified replacement for commercial fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire suppression systems, or professional emergency services.
