One defendant is out. Three competency reports are sealed. Who in the Siders case actually sees a jury box?
On October 6, Judge Laina Fetherolf Rogers dismissed the charges against Gary Siders Sr., 73, after a psychologist's report called him "simply not restorable." His attorney, Dorian Baum, said the cause was mental decline, not a treatable illness — and prosecutors didn't fight the finding. That leaves three defendants still in the Vinton County case stemming from the June 30 arrests in Hamden, Ohio: his wife Christina Siders, 68, his son Gary Siders Jr., 36, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Siders, 33, identified by the Ohio Attorney General's office as the mother of all sixteen children found in the home.
All four were originally charged with sixteen counts each of endangering children after deputies found the children living in one cramped section of the house, seven of whom needed Columbus hospitals. On July 29, Judge Rogers ordered competency evaluations for Christina and Gary Jr. Elizabeth's attorney, Stolly, went further, requesting both a competency evaluation and a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity — granted, and sealed. Gary Jr. and Elizabeth also face a separate four-count indictment (two counts of sexual battery, two of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor) tied to a 2022 incident involving a minor relative, announced by the Attorney General on August 21. At her September 16 arraignment, Elizabeth's bond rose to $550,000, and her attorney told the court she was married at 15 and spent roughly twenty years almost constantly pregnant.
This video walks through the three legal questions — is the person competent now, can it be restored, and what about at the time of the alleged conduct — and lines up what's public versus sealed in each of the three remaining Siders case folders. A Vinton County gag order issued July 14 means most of this plays out in sealed filings, not headlines, so we're tracking it piece by piece as rulings land.
Everyone named here is presumed innocent unless and until a court rules otherwise. Tell us in the comments: of the three open folders, which do you think the court rules on next?
