Sam jumped 2.5 m. Kim jumped 2.35 m. Kim's number has more digits, so who jumped farther? Learn tenths and hundredths with a cut-up square, read decimals on a place value chart (3.47 = 3 + 0.4 + 0.07), see decimals in money, learn why 0.5 = 0.50, and compare decimals by lining up the points. Then try the quiz and the super challenge!
In this video, kids aged 10-12 learn to: See tenths and hundredths on a cut-up square (0.1, 0.3, 0.01, 0.25), read decimals on a place value chart (3.47 = 3 + 0.4 + 0.07, said digit by digit), link them to money (dimes, pennies), know that a zero at the end does not change the value (0.5 = 0.50), and compare decimals by lining up the points and going place by place from the left.
What we learn:
Each place is ten times smaller than the place on its left.
A zero at the end does not change the value.
To compare, line up the points and start from the left.
New words: decimal, tenths, hundredths, digits, place, compare
