A powerful October snowstorm has slammed Montana with nearly 16 inches of snow in Great Falls, while isolated mountain locations reported accumulations approaching 30 inches. Now, the Western US winter storm is shifting south, bringing the threat of additional heavy mountain snow, dangerous travel conditions, and freezing temperatures across several states.
In Montana, heavy, wet snow has damaged trees, disrupted power lines, and affected nearly 16,000 electricity customers during the storm. Even after the heaviest snowfall, icy roads and freezing fog remain important concerns.
Meanwhile, Colorado's San Juan Mountains and other high-elevation areas face the potential for significant additional snowfall. Forecasts indicate a greater than 50% chance of at least 8 inches of snow in certain mountain locations above 10,000 feet across Utah and Colorado.
Wyoming's Wind River Mountains, Utah's Western Uintas, and Nevada's higher elevations have also faced winter weather hazards. Farther west, freezing temperatures threaten sensitive vegetation in parts of Idaho and California.
This Western US winter storm could affect mountain highways, local businesses, commuting workers, and families preparing for an unusually early arrival of winter weather.
Watch for the latest breakdown of snowfall totals, storm movement, affected states, and potential impacts through October 15.
