Why was Suryaputra Karna, one of the greatest warriors of the Mahabharata, forced to face so many hardships throughout his life? From his mysterious birth and abandonment to the curses that haunted his final battle, Karna’s life was marked by sacrifice, loyalty, humiliation and tragedy. Karna’s story begins when Kunti uses a divine mantra granted by Sage Durvasa to invoke Surya Dev. Born with divine Kavach and Kundal, Karna is abandoned by Kunti and raised by Adhiratha and Radha. Despite his extraordinary talent, his identity as a Suta’s son becomes an obstacle in his quest to become a great warrior. Determined to master archery, Karna approaches Parashurama and conceals his identity to receive training. When Parashurama discovers the truth, he curses Karna to forget the knowledge of his divine weapons at a crucial moment. Later, a Brahmin also curses him after Karna accidentally kills a calf, foretelling that his chariot wheel will become trapped during his decisive battle. Karna’s fortunes change when Duryodhana makes him the king of Anga and gives him the respect he has long desired. Karna remains fiercely loyal to Duryodhana, even when that loyalty places him on the side opposing the Pandavas. During Draupadi’s Swayamvar, his social identity becomes another source of humiliation. Yet his reputation as Danveer Karna grows when he gives away his divine Kavach and Kundal to Indra, receiving a powerful weapon in return. Before the Kurukshetra War, Shri Krishna reveals Karna’s true birth and offers him the opportunity to join his Pandava brothers. Karna refuses to abandon Duryodhana. He later meets Kunti and promises not to kill Yudhishthira, Bhima, Nakula or Sahadeva, leaving the outcome of his battle with Arjuna undecided. When Ghatotkacha threatens the Kaurava army, Karna is forced to use Indra’s divine weapon—the weapon he had saved for Arjuna. Finally, Karna faces Arjuna in the decisive battle. His chariot wheel sinks into the earth, and he cannot recall the mantras for his celestial weapons. Remembering Karna’s earlier actions in the war, Shri Krishna urges Arjuna to strike. Arjuna’s attack ends the life of one of the Mahabharata’s most tragic warriors.
