She was born in 1867 the poor relation of a royal family so buried in debt it fled Britain in 1883 to live cheaply abroad. By 1910 she was Queen consort of an empire of some 400 million people, and she carried an appetite the whole aristocracy had learned to fear. Queen Mary admired things, and what Queen Mary admired, Queen Mary tended to end up owning. She paid £10,000, close to three times the going rate, to claw back the Cambridge emeralds from her dead brother's mistress, then had his will sealed to bury the scandal, a will only unsealed in 2024. In 1929 she bought pieces of a murdered empress's jewels while one grieving grand duchess went to her grave certain she had been cheated. And on a farm at Sandringham, an epileptic son she had quietly moved out of sight had died in 1919, aged just 13.
