Tree-lined streets, an arboretum for a campus, and a progressive yard-sign density so thick you'll know precisely where each household stands on nine separate global issues before you've cleared the first stop sign. In this town, kindness is a lawn ornament, science is "trusted" (there's a sign), and everyone is welcome — provided they've read the same books. Some history: Swarthmore was founded by Quakers, who chartered Swarthmore College in 1864 — one of the country's earliest coeducational colleges, and to this day a place where tuition costs about as much as a starter home and the students will still explain capitalism to you. The whole campus doubles as the Scott Arboretum, so the greenery is grant-funded and immaculate. Best part — the borough stayed "dry" for well over a century, no bar, no liquor store, deep into modern times. A community this devoted to liberation, and you still couldn't get a beer. The Quakers giveth, the Quakers taketh away. It's genuinely lovely, though. The trees are perfect, the sidewalks are swept, nobody honks, and every single person means well with their whole heart.
