The ginger in your chai has NO home in the wild — humans are its only family. Yet this one root sailed 5,000 years to reach your cup! 🫚
It travelled with Austronesian sailors in storm-tossed canoes, sat on Confucius's table (he never ate without it), was sold in Rome for a fortune, and earned the Sanskrit name Vishvabhesaja — "universal medicine." The very word "ginger" is a mangled Indian name: śṛṅgavera → singabera → zinjiberis → ginger! In medieval England a pound of it cost a sheep. Queen Elizabeth I served her courtiers their own faces in gingerbread. Shakespeare advertised it for a penny. Henry VIII supposedly drank it against the plague (legend!). Vasco da Gama sailed to Calicut for it in 1498. England brewed it into ginger beer, a Toronto pharmacist bottled it into Canada Dry in 1904, and 12 clinical studies on 1,000+ women proved what grandmothers always knew about nausea. Today, India grows ~45% of the world's ginger — 4.9 million tonnes a year.
