An original horror story, written for this channel. Tucumcari, New Mexico once had over two thousand motel rooms, in a town that has never had more than about eight thousand people in it. Route 66 came down the main street, and it came through at exactly the hour of the day when a driver wants to stop. Then Interstate 40 was built, and it went around. I lived above one of the empty buildings on that strip for five months. Two hundred and fifty dollars a month, furnished. The diner on the ground floor had been closed since two thousand and thirteen. Chairs up on the tables, eleven stools at the counter, eleven years of dust over all of it. From my fourth night, between midnight and four, I could hear it working. Cutlery. Plates stacking. The bell over the door. A spatula on a flat top grill. Voices with no words in them. I recorded it. There is nothing on the tape. I put a cup on the counter and photographed it, and nine days later the dust around it had not moved by a millimetre. Nothing down there was ever touched. That is the part nobody understands when I tell this. Headphones on. Lights off.
