'The Plain One Will Do,' the Duke Said Coldly — Then She Pushed Back Her Hood Before the Court

In a crowded courtroom in Hereford, the cold Duke of Northcote was told to marry a daughter of Sir Rhys Morgan or ruin a hundred families. Sick of being sold like a horse at a fair, he pointed at a thin, freckled woman in a patched gray hood at the back of the hall and said, "The plain one will do." Everybody laughed. Then she walked to the front and pushed back her hood before the whole court. She was Nerys Morgan, the eldest daughter everyone believed was dead and buried in Geneva. Her stepmother screamed that she was an impostor. And that night she whispered that a dead girl is the easiest girl in the world to make dead again. A wall of rock crashing down in a lonely quarry. A forged letter and a beautiful old flame who returns to steal the Duke back. A kidnapped nurse, a flooded tunnel, a murdered father, and a second trial where a plain girl with a genius for figures must save herself. Sit back, relax and enjoy this long Regency romance full of secrets, betrayal, courage and a love that sees past every freckle.
