The Fence Keeper and the Elephant Shepherd | Full Documentary | MozRural

How can rural communities protect their livelihoods while conserving elephants and biodiversity? In Mozambique's Mágoè National Park, in Tete Province, coexistence between people and wildlife is a daily challenge. Elephants sometimes enter agricultural areas, destroying crops and threatening the livelihoods of families living in and around this protected area. The documentary "The Fence Keeper and the Elephant Shepherd" follows the everyday lives of Dona Berta, who maintains an electrified fence protecting her community's farmland, and an Elephant Shepherd who monitors elephant movements and helps prevent human–wildlife conflict. Through their stories, the film explores how the Sustainable Rural Economy Programme (MozRural) supports practical solutions, from agricultural protection fences and elephant tracking to ranger training, beekeeping and improved conservation management. Among the results highlighted are the fitting of tracking collars to 20 herd-leading elephants, conflict-prevention training for 554 community members and the protection of 153.9 hectares of farmland benefiting 205 families. More than a wildlife conservation story, this documentary highlights the importance of community participation in building a future where people and wildlife can coexist more safely and sustainably. About the Programme MozRural is a Government of Mozambique programme financed by the World Bank. Its conservation areas component is implemented by the Foundation for the Conservation of Biodiversity (BIOFUND), in coordination with the National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), with the involvement of partners including the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (MWA). 🎬 Short on time?
