In February 2019, the whole internet mourned a Mars rover with one sentence: "My battery is low and it's getting dark." It is a beautiful goodbye - and Opportunity never sent it. Those words come from a reporter's tweet translating the rover's final telemetry for the rest of us.
This is the true story of the last message from Mars: the ninety-day rover that worked for fifteen years, the planet-wide dust storm of June 2018, the final session on June 10 - a power figure of twenty-two watt-hours, the darkest sky ever measured on Mars, and one picture of the vanishing sun cut off partway through - then eight months of listening, more than a thousand recovery commands, and the night the team at JPL said goodbye with a Billie Holiday song from 1944.
What a machine really says when the lights go out turns out to be better than the myth.
