What Happened to Jacinta Marto After Fatima Still Has No Explanation
Jacinta Marto was only *seven years old* when she became one of the three children at the center of the events of Fatima in 1917.
Less than three years later, she was dead.
But what happened between the apparitions and her death—and what was reported when her grave was later opened—became an extraordinary part of the Fatima story.
In late 1918, Jacinta and her brother Francisco became ill during the devastating influenza pandemic. Francisco died in April 1919, while Jacinta's condition continued to deteriorate.
She developed serious complications and was eventually taken away from her family to Lisbon for treatment.
By February 1920, Jacinta was suffering from **purulent pleurisy and infection affecting two ribs**. Doctors performed an operation on February 10, removing the affected ribs, but her condition continued to worsen.
Ten days later, on **February 20, 1920**, Jacinta died in Lisbon. She was only nine years old.
Her story, however, continued after her burial.
Jacinta was initially buried in Ourém. In **1935**, her coffin was opened when her remains were transferred to Fatima. The official chronology of the Shrine of Fatima records Sister Lucia's indirect testimony that Jacinta's **face was found intact**.
Her remains were later transferred again and ultimately placed inside the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary at Fatima.
Decades later, the Catholic Church formally recognized the extraordinary devotion associated with the young visionary. Jacinta and Francisco were beatified in 2000 and canonized by Pope Francis on **May 13, 2017**, exactly one hundred years after the first Fatima apparition.
In this video, we examine Jacinta's final illness, the suffering she endured after Fatima, the accounts surrounding her death and exhumation, and how a nine-year-old Portuguese shepherd girl eventually became **Saint Jacinta Marto**.
She lived less than ten years.
But more than a century later, her story remains inseparable from the mystery of Fatima.
