What would happen if something fell toward a black hole? Would it bounce? Shrink? Or… turn into spaghetti?! In this episode: Meet Comet! She loves long trips around the Sun and wants to zoom right past a black hole. Black Hole asks her not to come too close, so Earth says, "Let's find out together — with a rock, not you!" From far, far away we watch a space rock float near a small black hole. A black hole pulls harder on the side that's closer, so the near end is pulled more than the far end… and the rock stretches longer, and longer, and thinner — like a noodle! Scientists really call this spaghettification. Science word: spaghettification (getting stretched long and thin, like spaghetti) Real fact: Near a small black hole, the pull on the near side of an object is much stronger than on the far side, so the object is stretched long and thin before it ever reaches the black hole. The nearest black hole we have found is about 1,560 light-years away. (NASA, ESO) In real life, no black hole is close to Earth or to comets going around the Sun.
