A sockeye salmon begins life beneath river gravel, crosses the North Pacific, and returns to Alaska carrying ocean-grown nutrients into the forest.
When a brown bear lifts a salmon from the river and carries it onto land, the fish becomes more than a meal. Leftovers can feed eagles, ravens, gulls, otters, insects and other small animals. Decomposition then releases nutrients into the soil, where roots can absorb them.
This wildlife documentary follows the sockeye salmon’s connected life cycle: eggs sheltered between stones, alevins and fry in freshwater, smolts moving toward the coast, adults feeding at sea, and spawning fish returning to the watershed where their journey began. It also reveals the connection running in the opposite direction, as streamside shade, fallen wood and sheltered pools help protect the next generation of young salmon.
Featured wildlife:
• Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)
• Alaska brown bear (Ursus arctos)
• Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
• North American river otter (Lontra canadensis)
• Ravens, gulls and aquatic invertebrates
