Welcome to Episode 2 of our Basic Engineering Mechanics video series!
In this lesson, we introduce scalar and vector quantities and explain how vectors are represented and combined to determine resultant forces.
We begin by discussing the differences between scalars and vectors, before moving on to vector operations and the graphical representation of forces. We also introduce the parallelogram law of vector addition and demonstrate how to apply the cosine and sine rules to determine the magnitude and direction of a resultant force.
📚 Topics Covered:
✅ Scalar and vector quantities
✅ Graphical representation and characteristics of vectors
✅ Multiplication of vectors by scalar quantities
✅ Addition of parallel vectors acting in the same and opposite directions
✅ Addition of non-parallel vectors
✅ Parallelogram law of vector addition
✅ Application of the cosine rule to determine resultant force magnitude
✅ Application of the sine rule to determine resultant force direction
🎯 Who Should Watch?
This lesson is suitable for engineering students studying Engineering Mechanics, Applied Mechanics, Statics, or introductory Physics. It is particularly useful for students in Mechanical, Civil, Geological, Mining, Minerals, Renewable Energy, and other engineering disciplines.
In the next episode, we'll solve more examples involving vector addition and the determination of resultant forces.
