Welcome to Königslutter am Elm – home of the Kaiserdom, the cathedral of an emperor! 🏰 This time my sister Sabine and I spent the day in Königslutter, a small market town at the edge of the Elm hills in Lower Saxony. We wandered through the old town, learned how Duckstein beer got its name, and stopped at the Stadtkirche St. Sebastian und Fabian. Then we walked up to the real reason Königslutter is famous: the Kaiserdom. Emperor Lothar III founded it in 1135, and he is buried here with his wife Richenza and his son-in-law Henry the Proud. We looked at the Lion Portal, the famous hunting frieze where the hares tie up the hunter, the beautiful Kreuzgang cloister and the painted interior, and finished at the Kaiser-Lothar-Linde, the old linden tree beside the church.
