I took on the challenge of cavern diving at the Inazumi Underwater Limestone Cave! It’s a difficult dive, but it’s packed with adventure and left a lasting impression. The Inazumi Underwater Limestone Cave, located in Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture, is Japan’s longest (and the country’s number one) underwater limestone cave—a globally rare phenomenon. Its formation began approximately 300 million years ago during the Paleozoic Era, and it was submerged by the massive eruption of the Aso Caldera between approximately 300,000 and 90,000 years ago. Inside, the environment remains extremely stable year-round, with both air and water temperatures maintaining a constant average of approximately 16°C. Due to the unique environment of the cave, where no light penetrates, when you actually dive inside, even in areas that are 4 to 5 meters wide and 2 meters high, you get the sensation that you’re barely able to squeeze through on your own. The complex terrain unique to caves and the cold, clear underground world offer a thrill that cannot be experienced during regular recreational diving, allowing you to enjoy a true sense of adventure. However, this environment demands a high level of diving skill: you must ensure your equipment doesn’t snag on the guide ropes, maintain proper neutral buoyancy to avoid hitting the ceiling in the narrow, ascending and descending passages, and keep track of your remaining air pressure to prevent stirring up sediment. It also requires mental fortitude to avoid panicking in the event of other unexpected issues. I definitely want to visit again and dive there once more.
