Take a virtual hike with Two Chicks with Hiking Sticks along the Piedras Marcadas Trail at Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque, New Mexico! This easy, mostly flat 1.8-mile out-and-back trail winds through open desert scrubland at the base of the West Mesa's volcanic escarpment, passing more than 400 petroglyphs carved by Ancestral Puebloan peoples hundreds of years ago.
Unlike the more developed Boca Negra Canyon area, Piedras Marcadas is quiet, undeveloped, and rarely crowded — just sandy desert trail, black basalt boulders, and centuries of rock art hiding in plain sight. Walk with us as we point out petroglyphs along the way, talk through the geology of this ancient lava flow, and share the cultural history that makes this canyon sacred ground to nearly 20 Indigenous nations today.
